Once the sun goes down in Ballarat on Saturday 4 March, the sounds of White Night will prove just as enchanting as the sights.
The inaugural program is filled with a line-up of music that will leave you in awe. We’ve taken a closer look at some of the artists enlivening the evening.
If 12 hours of straight music takes your fancy, the Live Music Marathon stage is where you’ll find just that. Located on Lydiard Street, the sounds on offer range from stylish jazz and foot-stomping bluegrass to rebellious rock and soothing blues.
Ballarat Ska Union are set to kick things off from 7.00pm with their super-tight rhythm section. Their performance promises an array of colourful horns that will be sure to get your feet moving.
At 10.40pm, Johnny Rooster are illuminating the stage with their bluesy ways. The set will include incredible covers of the genre’s most notable artists, such as Buddy Guy and Albert Collins.
If you won’t be starting your adventure until the early hours of the morning, rest assured there will still be plenty of magic taking place. Hot off a stellar White Night Melbourne performance, the Drowsy Maggies are the ones to stick around for at 5.00am. This four-piece folk band will melt your heart with their sweet vocals and fiery fiddle.
There’s also plenty happening in other corners of the city. As you roam around the precinct, keep an eye out for the Skulls – a Day of the Dead Mariachi band roving on the night. This group of cheeky, playful and sometimes provocative performers can be easily spotted wearing giant skulls.
Another must is a visit to Suttons House of Music, which will host a sure-to-be stunning performance by M and the Best Men – an acoustic trio equipped with an acoustic guitar, keyboard, loop pedal and an array of other impressive instruments. Then, before the night ends, a dance to the music at Swing City is essential. They’re grooving until 6.00am and swing legend John Morrison will be in charge of the sounds, so you’re certainly in safe hands.
There’s plenty to be heard this White Night Ballarat; explore the program to plan your evening before the city is transformed like never before.
