What do you really know about Ballarat? Most likely not a lot more than its ties to the gold rush in the 1800s.
You probably didn’t know that it’s certainly giving Melbourne a run for its money in terms of its culture and food. On Saturday 4 March, the city will be transformed into a spectacle of light when White Night Ballarat takes over. Here are just a few reasons why you should make a whole weekend of it...
1. It’s now listed up there with the likes of Paris, Toronto and Chicago as a White Night host city
White Night is putting Ballarat on the map. From 7pm – 7am, the city will come alive with a stunning display of lighting, art, music and performances. Most of the works will run for the duration of the night, so you’ll be able to witness Ballarat in a completely different light.
2. The food, wine and craft beer
Food lovers, take note – the fare in Ballarat will stun you. Start your morning brunching at Webster’s Market & Cafe devouring some of the finest local produce. Ease into the afternoon with your beer and burger at Hop Temple or sip on the delicious regional wine at Mitchell Harris. Feast away the evening at Catfish – one of the best Thai restaurants in the country.
3. It’s really, really beautiful
Ballarat is home to Lake Wendouree – an urban lake surrounded by a 6-kilometre track that’s perfect for strolling around on a warm day. Nearby you’ll find the Ballarat Botanical Gardens blooming with flowers and bursting with great picnic spots. And less than half an hour away are the stunning Lal Lal Falls, which are well worth exploring.
4. There’s so much more to do than just mine for gold
There’s no denying that visiting Sovereign Hill is an essential part of truly experiencing Ballarat. But there are plenty of activities beyond that. If you’re an art lover, the Art Gallery of Ballarat holds a breathtaking collection of historical and contemporary art. Got kids? Take them to the Ballarat Wildlife Park to stare in awe at the native animals. Or if shopping is more your thing, there are plenty of wonderful shops scattered around the city.
5. Who doesn’t love a holiday?
There’s nothing better than escaping home for a weekend and breathing in the sights and sounds of somewhere new. Make your next trip to Ballarat.
